East Mountain School
The East Mountain School is a state-approved private special education school for
students in grades 7-12 that are classified as emotionally disturbed or behaviorally
disordered. The school was established in 1980 as part of the Carrier organization
and provides a safe, challenging and enriching educational environment that is responsive
to individual needs, supports personal growth and development and encourages students
to seek out and take advantage of opportunities to learn and change.
The School program provides specialized instructional programs, strong counseling
services and support (including therapists working with licensed therapy dogs when
appropriate), a highly trained and specialized staff and a very supportive school
climate. With a high level of support and a student to staff ratio of two to one,
the East Mountain School has provided many troubled adolescents with an opportunity
to get an education, improve their ability to deal with personal issues and take
major steps toward reaching both academic and therapeutic goals.
Established in 1980 as the Carrier Foundation Day School, the East Mountain School
has been designed to meet the special education needs of adolescents with emotional
and behavioral problems. Students at the East Mountain School have been affected
by a variety of psychiatric disorders, learning problems and difficulty interacting
with others in and out of school. Prior to coming to East Mountain School, these
students’ problems have had a significant impact on their education, families and
friends. Through a combination of specialized instructional and counseling programs,
a highly qualified staff, and a supportive school climate, the East Mountain School
has helped some of the toughest, most troubled kids in the state get an education,
gain insight into their personal issues, and take some major steps towards reaching
their goals.
The East Mountain School is:
